“When you file your lawsuit, you’re ready for trial,” says Gold, the charismatic 61-year-old founder of the Miami-based Ticket Clinic, a massive traffic law firm known for its incessant advertising.
The graying lawyer frowns and begins questioning his client, a squirrel-like fellow named Matthew who was stopped on the way to the dog copier. But Gold has a trump card: the officer stopped both Matthew and the other driver at the same time.
“Did he have the ability to point his speedometer, his radar, his laser at this person, give them a signal and then do the same thing?” Gold asks.
“I don’t think that’s possible,” Matthew says. “It’s like a silver bullet in the Kennedy assassination. I don’t understand how he could do that.”

Di Ioia pleads not guilty to Matthew, and Gold and his client storm out of the courthouse in mourning, as if they had just been sentenced to life in prison. “Yes!” Gold exclaims, clenching his fist like Johnnie Cochran at the acquittal of O.J.
The case, which aired on a 2009 episode of truTV’s Speeders Fight Back, was another victory for Gold, who reports a 97% success rate. The firm pioneered a comprehensive advertising approach to fighting traffic tickets, a niche that was virtually untouched by lawyers when Gold launched in the late 1980s. The ticket clinic now employs 300 people and has 26 locations in Florida and ten in California.
“I actually created an entire industry,” Gold boasts. “No one has been able to reproduce what we do.”

Lawyers like Gold say that by commercializing the profession, they have empowered drivers of all income and education levels to fight unfair tickets and arrests for driving under the influence. The gold company has also spent hundreds of thousands of dollars advocating for policies that put a strain on drivers’ wallets, such as red-light cameras. “We are at the forefront of traffic law and fight against laws that we consider illegal or unfair,” says Gold.
But Ticket Clinic’s explosive growth, driven by a lack of control at both the national and corporate levels, has also left it vulnerable to abuse.
The FDLE is currently investigating allegations that company executives exchanged money for fake driver’s licenses. A former employee has filed a lawsuit making the same allegations, saying he warned Gold about the problems and was ignored. Other workers who spoke to New Times described a hostile work environment that led to abuse and a culture of fear. And outside critics say the company has used its big profits to sway the litigation in favor of more pro-traffic judges.
“I have a great company. “We do great work for people,” Gold rejects the allegations of misconduct. “I take every employee’s complaint very seriously. . . As far as I know, the majority of our employees are very satisfied.”

But the clinic founder also made a name for himself personally through his questionable behavior. In recent years, Zelts waged a legal war against a strip club over a $19,000 bill, was arrested for domestic violence – a charge that was later dropped – and was sued by the Florida Bar over some of his business practices fined.
“Mark believes he is invincible,” said Nieves Arango, a former lawyer for Ticket Clinic. “He believes he is above the law, that whatever he does is OK and everyone should sit back and accept it.”
Zelts disagrees with this criticism and says that what drives him every morning is to provide the best customer service. “There aren’t many lawyers who can get out of bed for $69.95,” he says. “People love us. We’re doing a really good job.”
