Empty Children’s Hospital is the only public hospital built during World War II. At the time, Iowa had the highest rate of polio among children of any state, but was one of the few states that did not have a pediatric hospital to care for children. To improve the health of sick and injured children in Iowa, the family of AH and Anna Blank built the first hospital in 1944 in memory of their son Raymond, who died in infancy, and that legacy that continues for more than 75 years.
AH. and Anna Blank founded the Raymond Blank Memorial Children’s Hospital in 1944 in honor of their son Raymond, who died young at the age of 33. Raymond Blank is America’s youngest Eagle Scout. He attended the Geneva Peace Conference as a young journalist and was appointed by President Roosevelt to head the State Polio Foundation. When the Children’s Hospital Board of Directors recognized the need for a “newly expanded, children’s hospital in 2001, Mike and Jackie were the first two stepped forward.
Their generosity led to the success of $8.4 million, the most of any Iowa hospital effort. Their kindness will live on today and into the future. Myron and Jackie were devoted supporters and when Myron died in 2005, he left a $5 million gift to Blank Children’s Hospital in his will. This gift helped launch the Empty Children’s Hospital Wish Fundraising. Their kindness is reflected in every aspect of our city and country; The zoo, the arts center, and the university’s gifted and talented programs are just a few. But nowhere is their leadership and charity more appreciated than Blank Children’s Hospital. The happy smiles of our young patients every day is a testimony of our gratitude.
