Mike Levin provides development, content, and line editing for book manuscripts, essays, short stories, and book proposals. She loves fiction, short stories, art and culture, biography and memoir, poetry. Before becoming a freelance editor, he spent nine years as an editor at Northwestern University Press, overseeing a variety of publications, including fiction, nonfiction, drama, poetry, and nonfiction. Among his authors are MacArthur, Guggenheim fellows, Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winners. He published the works of writers Thomas Rayfill, Kathleen Hill, Lyudmila Ulitskaya; poets AE Stallings, Rakele Hadas, and Amit Majmudar; playwrights Stephen Karam, Lydia R. Diamond, and David Ives; experts Annette Insdorf and Brian Boyd; and author Jen Begin and playwright Claire Barron, both White Paper 2017 winners. In 2015, she was named one of New City’s Lite 50: Real Writers Chicago. He has served on the boards of the Sewanee Writers’ Conference, Squaw Valley Writers’ Workshop, AWP, and other conferences. Before joining Northwestern, he was the executive director of the Great Books Foundation in Chicago. Since 2000, he has taught literature and film seminars in several continuing education programs. President Dave Busick opened the meeting with the kind of “correct vamp” that a regular on-air reporter can do, inviting Doug Lewis to leave lunch on the table. Doug did his best job with clear ideas and led us through the Pledge of Faith and read the 4th test. Jeff Stickel went to Rio on Friday to lead the US Olympic wrestling team, warmly welcoming and introducing visiting Rotarians and guests.
Club member Sandy Hatfield Club introduced our speaker, Des Moines Rotarian Michelle Book, CEO of the Iowa Food Bank. Michelle joined the organization on February 1 following a career that began in the soybean fields at the age of 11 and included CPA and regulatory roles, as well as public relations and philanthropic work with DuPont Pioneer. Michelle’s message was so insightful that member David Amman called down to ask how we could help.
Michelle began asking for each table to be counted. We didn’t know that “three” meant people who didn’t eat for twenty-four hours, except for Saturdays and Sundays, and went to school with lunch.
He said the Iowa Food Bank is a “warehouse business that collects, buys, researches, stores and redistributes food” to those in need. The food bank serves 180,000 Iowans in 55 Iowa counties. They partner with 94 organizations to provide this service and serve the hungry directly, providing more than 1 million pounds of food each month. The Iowa Food Bank also works with organizations; Michelle identified Hy-Vee, Walmart and Aldi among many others.

The organization began in 1983 with a donation of cottage cheese from Anderson Erickson Dairy. By 1986, the business was making over £2m a year, up from £12m last year.
After our big lunch in Wacon, the room fell silent as more than 384,000,000 people said 12.4% of Iowans were “food insecure.” Many factors contribute to this, which is defined as “insufficient nutrition for a healthy, active lifestyle,” but the leading indicator is the increase in poverty in Iowa. Polk County has a food insecurity rate of 12.5%, while Blackhawk, Webster and Lee counties all have rates above 14%. Rotarians’ responses revealed that they were surprised that 20% of struggling families have a veteran, 41% have a family member with a college degree, and 54% have someone who served in the past year.
The Iowa Food Bank has a Mobile Pantry program, similar to a farmers market. The organization carries goods in a truck and delivers them to rural people who want them; last year they served 140 portions of 500,000 pounds of food. 31 schools participate in the school lunch program, and this summer alone, 30,000 meals were distributed through the summer lunch drive. One hundred and ninety schools donate 6,000 bags of food each week through the BackPack program. Its goal is to provide free meals in kindergarten-5
Michelle said the first phase of the Food Bank was completed with great goals. Among them, they want to double the distribution of food and test programs within 10 years for representative people such as volunteers, the elderly, refugees and migrants, and promote public gardens.
