Unity Point West Des Moines – Yesterday at the first MedCity Invest Pop Health Conference in New Orleans, Unity Point Health announced the launch of a $100 million venture capital fund.
The new fund, called UnityPoint Health Ventures Innovation Fund, will manage the company’s financial and strategic investment opportunities.

The fund will invest in emerging companies in four key areas: digital health, medical devices, therapeutic spaces and healthcare services.

According to the fund’s press release, the money for the fund will be provided by redistributing funds previously earmarked for investments.
A major agricultural technology accelerator in Iowa has gained more supporters and finally has a name. The Greater Des Moines Partnership first announced the accelerator last year and named four initial investors. The partnership announced Monday that the program will be called the Iowa AgriTech Accelerator and will name three new investors. New investors include Grinnell Mutual, Kent Corp. and Skip Manufacturing, all Iowa companies. These investors include Deere & Co., Peoples Co., Farmers Mutual Hail Insurance Co. and join DuPont Pioneer. Each investor agreed to invest $100,000 in the accelerator’s first year. Startups participating in the program receive $40,000 in seed funding in exchange for 6 percent equity. Tej Dhawan, an angel investor and mentor to local startups, will serve as interim director until the AgriTech Accelerator appoints a permanent leader. Dhawan held a similar role at GIA before Brian Hemseth was appointed managing director. As interim director, Dhawan said his main responsibilities included hiring the accelerator’s executive director, creating a business structure and initial recruitment for the first cohort. Dhawan said the accelerator will add several filters like location and product to the applicant pool. “If you are looking for innovation, innovation can come from any part of the world. So why should we limit ourselves to that,” he said. One area where the AgriTech Accelerator is not recruiting is biotechnology. For its first cohort, the AgriTech Accelerator will operate out of GIA’s East Village Des Moines facility. Future permanent housing has not yet been determined. The accelerator program will host startups from mid-July to mid-October, Dhawan said. will conclude with a GIA event based on the AgriTech Accelerator, also concluding with lectures at an industry event. The accelerator has also started a group of mentors. The Iowa Corn Growers Association, the Iowa Soybean Growers Association and the Iowa Pork Growers Association agreed to provide mentors, as did Iowa State University. Although the AgriTech Accelerator is partially based on GIA, Dhawan said, it will differ in its business structure. GIA follows a profit-oriented model for both its operations and its investment fund. The AgriTech Accelerator will have a non-profit model for its operations and a non-profit structure for its funding. Dhawan said the non-profit model will be used to allow the accelerator to better collaborate with other non-profit partners such as trade associations. “These are all organizations that are not-for-profit and can be great stakeholders without investing in an accelerator,” he said. “If we’re also a non-profit organization, it’s easier for us to work with trade associations in their non-profit role.” If successful, the AgriTech Accelerator would be one of the few agriculture-focused startup development programs in Iowa.
