It comes down to a matter of choice for the home owner. If you are looking for a low maintenance landscape, rock is our recommendation. If you want to work more in your garden and annual plants, we recommend mulch. However, leather chips require top dressing every year, while stones do not.
Western red cedar mulch is often recommended. This mulch has a good, natural fragrance, is slow to rot and is resistant to termites. Hardwood mulch is a secondary recommendation, as colored mulch can add landscape contrast.
We only use landscape fabric when the floor includes stone. We only use top of the line 20 year old landscape fabric. This woven fabric allows water, air and nutrients into the soil while creating a barrier to prevent weed growth. When landscaping with mulch, we do not use landscape fabric. Since mulch is an organic material, it breaks on top of the material and creates a layer of compost that allows grass to grow. Mulch should also be in contact with the soil to prevent the mulch from blowing away during stormy weather. When mulch is placed on top of the fabric, it can easily blow away.
