First opened in 1916, the Northwestern Hotel was built to serve the needs of railroad workers and travelers from the nearby Chicago and Northwestern stations. It was especially popular with the public at the Iowa State Fair.

The guest rooms on the second and third floors are mostly small and arranged around a space with skylights. Some of the larger rooms have a private bathroom with a view of the city. The second living room has three bathrooms. The building was originally designed to have six floors, but had to be reduced to three floors.
However, the foundations of the building have been laid and concrete has been poured to support the additional floors, and the chimney on the fourth floor is in the attic.
