WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Boston Market locations across South Florida are closed as the Colorado company faces lawsuits, layoffs and claims that workers were not paid.

According to a lawsuit filed earlier this year in US District Court in Illinois, US Foods said Boston Market owes more than $11 million in unpaid bills.

The lawsuit alleges Boston Market “fell significantly behind payment obligations to US Foods” in early 2022 and obtained a payment plan from the struggling restaurant chain. However, US Foods says the Boston market has yet to keep up with the payments.

Now, the last of eight Palm Beach County properties has closed amid eviction notices for nonpayment of rent.

The US Department of Labor is also investigating the Boston market amid numerous complaints of late and unpaid wages.
Lele West, who worked as general manager at Boston Market in west Boca Raton, told the South Florida SunSentinel that she was fired when her store closed in August. He told this newspaper that the workers who are working there are trying to get the company to pay them for the last two months of work. The eviction lawsuits last month led to shutdowns across the state and in South Florida, court records show.
General manager Lele West, who was fired in August when his Boca Raton store closed, explained that it has enough food and groceries to stay open after the chain’s largest retailer, US Foods, stopped supplying. The purchase was settled by Boston Market and then sued Illinois in July, saying it owed $11 million.

The last remaining Boston Market stores in Broward, Palm Beach and Miami-Dade closed in November after the landlords obtained documents in their eviction lawsuit saying the company had stopped paying rent months earlier.

A dated Nov. 9 eviction notice was posted this week on the front door of the store on West Commercial Boulevard in Tamarac.
At one store on Atlantic Blvd West in Margate, across from two sad pumpkins, a simple tape taped to the door read: “We will be closed today.” I don’t know what caused this shop to be closed. No evictions were found at this location.
In the state health department’s inspection report, it is stated that the 50 S. Flamingo Road, Pembroke Pines location was opened on November 13 before being retaken by the landlord on Nov. 27.

Other Broward County properties hit by landlords in eviction lawsuits in November include 3249 Hollywood Blvd., Hollywood and 330 S. University Drive, Farm. 5815 N. Tamarack An eviction case is pending for the property on University Drive.
In late 2022, the homeowners will open 1,500 S. Stores at Federal Highway and 1787 E. Commercial Boulevard back to back.

In Miami-Dade County, seven eviction orders have been issued this year, while one eviction case is pending.
In late October, Florida Department of Health officials ordered the temporary closure of the Hollywood location, as well as a location in Cutler Bay in Miami-Dade County, after flies and cockroaches were recorded in food preparation areas. Mouse droppings were found at the Cutler Bay site.
Customer comments on social media this year expressed disappointment with the quality of food and service at the South Florida location, with some commenters posting photos of everyday items served in empty containers instead of packaging.
West said he is loyal to longtime customers who saw a difference after US Foods stopped offering what they know. “They’ll tell you right away that it’s not real — especially mac and cheese,” he said. “I was telling them that we were no longer in touch with our supplier and we had to find things where we could.”

West said he and other employees began losing benefits in January, including their retirement accounts and health insurance.
Asked why workers continue to come to South Florida stores even though the company is missing out on paying them, West said he wants to believe things will get better.

While many people left after the payments stopped, those who stayed felt a sense of camaraderie as they fought to keep the doors open, West said.
