Des Moines International Airport is a public airport located three miles southwest of Des Moines in Polk County, Iowa. It was built in 1932 on 160 acres of farmland with two 1,800-foot runways. The airport’s first passenger terminal was built recently, then replaced by another terminal in 1950, which has been expanded and renovated several times over the years. Today, the airport covers 2,625 acres, and its two runways have been extended to just over 9,000 feet each.

The airport was originally operated by the Parks Department of the City of Des Moines. The airport was renamed Des Moines International Airport in 1986 to reflect the presence of a US Customs Service office, and in 1993 the Des Moines International Airport Board was formed to manage the airport. The land is owned by the city, but it has transferred ownership of all buildings and equipment to state officials. Also, the authorized body agreed to lease the land for 99 years. According to a 2014 economic impact study, the airport employs 58 people and generates $644 million in annual economic activity.

“Since our passenger traffic is much higher than it was in 2014, we know it’s much higher today than ever before,” said CEO Kevin Foley. “We have six advanced aircraft up and running; Today we have three levels of flight services. We have three legacy carriers – American, Delta and United; We have another low-cost carrier – Southwest; And then we have two very low-cost carriers – Allegiant and Frontier. So we are very comfortable with the current levels of air service. “

Direct (non Stop) Flights From Atlanta To Des Moines

As for competition from nearby commercial airports, Foley explained, “We just completed a market study, or what’s known in the industry as a ‘leak’ study. Within a 90 mile radius we handle 70% of the traffic we need in this market. Within 50 miles we stopped the entire fall. Most of our waterfalls are located in Minneapolis, three hours from Des Moines, and of course our markets conflict and actually overlap. The other two airports we compete with are Omaha and Kansas City. Kansas City is a three-hour drive; Omaha is two and a half hours away.”

It is a unit of the Iowa Air National Guard and both FedEx and UPS carry cargo in and out of Des Moines International. About 115 of the world’s largest airlines – private and corporate companies – are also located there. “We used to have waiting lists for hangar spaces, but in 2018 we built new hangars,” Foley said. “So today we have three leases. At the ends of the T-hangars are several hangar boxes for small corporate jets. We had to move some buildings in preparation for the new station we wanted to build, so we built new hangars in one place, demolished buildings in another and we built others at the same time.

Speaking of other ongoing projects, Foley adds, “I have a boss who tells me the airport is always being neglected. We’re in the process of completing the first road reconstruction. We brought it to the base. Phase 1 of the runway reconstruction. For that, our air we have a grant to upgrade the port and that will start in the spring. But we’ve been working on roads since 2010, whether it’s our transit system or rail.

“At the same time, we are reorganizing our southern airport,” he said. “It’s actually cargo and there are some light GA facilities. We dismantled the cargo ramp we built in 2000; it’s 26 acres. It’s a very large area. Because air traffic in the U.S. is down, the ramp is underutilized. We moved to one of the two FBOs, Signature Flight Support and our Des Moines Flying Service, one of the air navigation service operators, will be moved from near the station on the south side of the building and they will use the other half of the ramp. All of this construction has been going on for the past three years and will now be completed this fall. Now the terminal area is completely open. will be so that we can start the construction of what we call the east.be quadrangle here at the airport and start the terminal project.

Des Moines Airport To Begin New Terminal Construction Project

“Except for the runways, all the construction is part of the final project. It was originally $500 million and everyone thought we built it.
