It’s the godfather’s pizza. This is all true. We recently learned that Willie Thiessen, the founder of The Godfather, started his first pizza joint by serving pizza on the bar wall next to it. Talk about a restaurant story with humble beginnings.

While the business started in Omaha, the first franchise actually opened in Lincoln in 1974. The company quickly achieved great success, becoming the number one selling fast food chain in 1978, and by 1982 the largest pizza chain in America.

One thing Godfather does is development. They are of the opinion that the demand of the market should be met. Their franchisees also demand this. In fact, when a franchisee comes on board it currently has four concepts to choose from. I looked at a few different shops. They have full-service offerings with buffet, dine-in, delivery, drive-through, and carry-out options available only at locations and convenience stores.
The new concept recently completed its renovation. The Northwest Omaha location has a vintage Italian feel. We saw colorful paint on the walls. Italian music plays in the background. It also has a booth where you can sit to “meet the godfather”. We had lunch here recently and Tim and I loved the new decor. It had an updated feel, and we immediately noticed the rustic colors.
When asked what their favorite place for pizza is, most people say their favorite. We are no exception. Overall, we like The Godfather. We enjoy their taco pizza with golden crust and fresh toppings of salsa. It is a great value when we go out to eat with my sister and her kids.
Apart from pizza, they are also known for their sweet treats including my favorite – their chocolate chip cookies in the shape of mini pizzas.

Thyssen eventually sold the chain to Pillsbury. Herman Cain (who later ran for President of the United States) was appointed CEO. A few years later, Ken and some other senior managers bought the pizza chain from Pillsbury. Cain was later bought by the owner.
