Craigslist Used Trucks For Sale By Owner – You might believe the legendary status of this medium-duty truck, but the Toyota Tacoma was a while ago. It first appeared on the scene in 1995, part of a long line of Toyota supercars. The Japanese automaker decided to simply name the truck when it was time for a complete redesign, and the Tacoma was born. But those who came before are also icons.
The Toyota Pickup (yes, that’s what it’s called), dates back to 1968 and was sold under that name in the United States until the Tacoma came along. Toyota then decided to officially split its mid-size truck offering into two names, Tacoma and Hilux, the latter for overseas markets. With all that being clear, many of us still remember the Tacoma’s predecessor, the fifth generation Toyota Pickup.

Introduced in 1988, it had a longer wheelbase and an adjustable wheelbase to attract more customers. Remember, the Tundra was not yet fully grown. Toyota also phased out the one-piece cargo box of the fourth generation because its seams tended to corrode. Because of the international truck market, they offered several engines. These range from a small 1.8-liter four-four with only 78 horsepower, to a 3.0-liter V6 with 150 hp, and even a 3.0-liter V6 diesel with 90 hp and 139 lb-ft of torque.

Beginning in 1991, production began in the United States at Toyota’s NUMMI manufacturing facility in Fremont, California. Fast car nerd factoid: Toyota, a joint venture with GM, closed the facility in 2010. Later that year, it reopened under new ownership, Tesla. It is still very much in business today. Toyota pickups were built in North America in Fremont until the Tacoma, which is now built in San Antonio, Texas.
The fifth Toyota Pickup became very successful, and even Volkswagen was interested in it. How is that? It was produced and refined as Taro from 1989 to 1997 for Germany and other parts of Europe. In addition to the Freemont, Toyota also built this truck in Colombia for the South American market, where it was available with a variety of engine and cab and bed configurations. Here in the US, the V6 version of the Xtracab SR5 won Motor Trend’s Truck of the Year award in 1988.
Tacoma arrived in 1995 and is still with us today. Even used Tacomas are very popular and sometimes sell for ridiculously high prices. In fact, Toyota dealers sell them quickly in days after trade-in. Although they are still out there, fifth generation transporters are a little more difficult simply because of their age, but they usually age very well with good care.
This example, currently for sale on Craigslist in Portland, Oregon, is one of the best we’ve seen so far. Asking price: around $25,000. You read that right. This ’93 Toyota SR5 3.0-liter V6 4WD Extra Cab has only had one owner and a total of 132,213 miles. However, it is in display condition. The paint is original, as is the glass and chrome. Inside? No error. Some recent services include new spark plugs, spark plugs, plugs, caps, rotors, oil change, and a recent A/C recharge. The automatic transmission has no issues and its extra features, including a power moonroof, work well. With a tow kit that includes a bumper and receiver linkage, the dealer also added new BFG tires.

Given how quickly the value of vintage trucks, especially Toyotas, has increased recently, a hefty investment of $25 seems totally reasonable. Recently at TFL HQ we decided to buy an old Toyota pick’emup truck to take to the mountains and film and hit the road. The reason we decided to buy a truck is because we usually borrow a truck from the manufacturer for a week and they expect us to return it to them in the same condition as it arrived at the offices us.
You can see the truck manufacturer gets a little mad if we take their truck up a hill and put it back with a shock, explosive shock, or 200 pounds of dirt and mud stuck in the bottom. So we thought it would make sense to buy an old truck, which we can rip and tear at will without asking for permission or an apology from the truck manufacturers.
We also figured it would make a fun video series to see an old truck in regular use (and yes, maybe a little abuse) in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado.
After a long search on Craigslist in Denver, we found this vintage 1994 Toyota truck that looked perfect—but there was one weird problem. Although the seller included many pictures, they did not include many details. Of course, the other thing that stood out in the ad was the price. The asking price was several thousand dollars below market value.

Being the investigative journalists that we are, we decided to call the dealer and write to the dealer for more information about the Toyota truck. Our calls were never returned and the next day the ad was removed from Craigslist. We understand that someone must have gotten a good deal on a truck that was good.
Hello, my 1994 Toyota Pickup is still for sale. This gift is in good shape. I am the original owner. There is no damage, no scratches, dents or hidden damage. It is in perfect condition, meticulously maintained and has never been in an accident… Only 115,000 miles, manual, with 2.4L 4cyl engine, 4WD, red exterior and side a – clean inside. I have clear title, no liens or liens on it, in my name. I am selling it at this final price of $1,700 because my husband died 1 month ago (he had a heart attack) and it brings back bad memories so I want to sell it as.p. I like to use eBay services for both of our securities, so if you want to buy this truck just email me with your full name, mailing address and phone number, to let eBay know you have your choice I am a potential buyer and will contact you to explain the whole process. Thank you, Marie Garrett
The question for you is a simple one. Is it too good to be true? Is this a Craigslist truck scam?

We talked about the possibility of a new Toyota Stout for a while, now we have something to base it on, and it’s SA! The Toyota Tacoma is truly a near-perfect midsize truck. We say “almost perfect” because a car never achieves perfection; there are always at least some negatives. But Tacoma’s many accomplishments should still be celebrated. Toyota has proven that it knows how to make trucks that the world wants, but the most sacred truck is the midsize segment. And there’s something some of us are too young to know: Tacoma existed a long time ago.
Although Toyota made a midsize pickup, it wasn’t called the Tacoma. In fact, it didn’t have a name at all, just a Pickup Truck. But in some markets it was and still is known as the Hilux. We will come back to that shortly.
The Hilux/Pickup truck, in particular, remains a revered symbol to this day. Before the first generation Tacoma arrived in 1995, the Toyota Pickup Truck had been around since 1968. It underwent several redesigns over the years and when the Tacoma’s predecessor came on the scene, it was entering its fifth generation. The year was 1988.
The reviews were almost immediate. For example, Motor Trend named it Truck of the Year, and sales took off quickly. Production took place in several countries, including Japan, Argentina, New Zealand and the United States. The truck was modified slightly for each market, especially with the tender engines. Both diesel and petrol as well as two and four door body style configurations were offered. There was also regular and Xtra cable.

For America, the Pickup Truck is powered by a 3.0-liter V6 with 150 hp. By today’s standards, this is not much, but it still works. These engines, especially the V6, are real shooters. Even the transmissions, four- and five-speed manuals and four-speed automatics, are known for their durability. When it came to retiring the fifth generation truck, Toyota made an important decision: splitting the truck line between North America and the rest of the world. Tacoma was born and Hilux lived elsewhere. This situation remains the same today.
Like classic 4Runners and Land Cruisers (especially the latter), fifth-generation Toyota Pickup Trucks are beginning to find a new generation of potential younger buyers.
