An E. coli outbreak that has spread to nine states has been linked to the Pizza Ranch chain in Iowa, but health officials have declared the outbreak over. 13 people fell ill, two were taken to hospital and no deaths were reported.

A spokeswoman for the Centers for Disease Control told the Register that nine of the sick people reported eating at Pizza Ranch before they got sick. The chain’s investigation focused on the dry flour mixture used in the dessert, but no bacteria were found in the mixture. The outbreak is believed to have ended after Pizza Ranch stopped using the product in February.
In a statement released Wednesday, Pizza Ranch Chief Administrative Officer Ryan Achterhoff blamed the outbreak on one of the chain’s suppliers.
“Actual modeling shows that the source of the bacteria comes from an outside supplier and not from our restaurants,” Achterhoff said. “Several states have collected products from Pizza Ranch restaurants to test for the presence of E.coli O157, even though none of the products tested were found. Pizza Ranch was contaminated. We did more than 40 tests on different products. Check of E. coli O157 and it was not found in any of the products tested.We have also provided the researchers with a public health list of all ingredients as well as contact information for our ingredient suppliers.
After the case was closed, all Pizza Ranch locations are “open and serving a full menu,” Achterhoff said. The outbreak is further evidence that foodborne illness is on the rise in the United States.
