Phoenix Police Department Accident Reports – PHOENIX – Police are investigating a Phoenix police SUV that caught fire Thursday and killed one person.
According to Phoenix police, an officer was transporting an inmate near 35th Avenue and Thunderbird Road on Dec. 21 when he was struck by another vehicle. After hitting the patrol vehicle, the vehicle crashed into an electric pole and burst into flames.

“I heard two thuds from the explosion. I saw smoke and ran over and by that time the back of the car was on fire,” said Ryan Hayes.

According to reports, workers from a nearby company used fire extinguishers to put out the flames for some time after the accident.
The crash happened in the early morning hours of Dec. 21 in the area of 35th Avenue and Thunderbird. According to the police, one of the cars involved in the accident was driven by an officer who was transporting prisoners. Meanwhile, residents call the intersection bad news. FOX 10’s Brian Webb reports.
“Additional information, including witness statements and video surveillance footage, led investigators to determine that the car Viless was running through the intersection at a red light prior to the collision,” read part of a statement released by Phoenix police officials.
“Preliminary information indicates that the officer was turning south on Thunderbird Road onto West 35th Avenue,” Sergeant Rob Scherer said. “The officer collided with another vehicle traveling eastbound on Thunderbird Road.”

Video taken at the scene after the incident showed the intersection littered with debris and a car engulfed in flames. Residents of the area said that there was bad news for Chowk.
“Accidents happen all the time and, again, you know there’s some construction going on at that intersection right now. It may not help anymore, but it’s a very dangerous area of action and intersection,” Eck said.

According to Phoenix Police Sergeant Rob Scherer, an officer transported an inmate to the Cactus Park Precinct. Near 35th Avenue and Thunderbird Road, the officer attempted to make a left turn when the officer and another vehicle collided head-on. After the first crash, Sergeant Scherer said the other driver, 19-year-old Ashley Viles, lost control and crashed into a light pole and a traffic box. The vehicle then caught fire and Viles died at the scene.

The officer and inmate were taken to the hospital with minor injuries but are expected to be in stable condition. Police said witnesses and video surveillance footage led investigators to the conclusion that Viless drove a car that ran a red light before the collision. Video from the scene shows damage to the front of the patrol car, while another car appears to be on fire and crashed. Investigators are still working to determine the cause of the crash.

According to the police, the patrol car was damaged when another driver hit the officer’s patrol car. The officer was trapped inside the vehicle and had to be extricated from the vehicle by the Phoenix Fire Department.
The occupants of the car that hit the officer fled the scene but were located and arrested, police said.
