In less than a decade, the Florida lawyer has become a voice for the families of Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown, Breonna Taylor and George Floyd — black men who died at the hands of police and vigilantes.

Crump, 51, was a hard worker who combined Southern charm, an ability to draw media attention to his cases, and a strong belief that racism plagued the country, and the court was the right place to deal with it.

Crump’s path to becoming a lawyer and advocate began when he was growing up in Lumberton, North Carolina, where he was the oldest of nine children and siblings.
In his book “Open Season: Legalized Genocide of Colored People,” he describes learning in elementary school that a white classmate’s weekly income was the same as his mother’s weekly income from two jobs in a shoe factory and hotel laundry.

“I wanted to understand why the people in the white line were so good and the black people in our line were so bad,” he wrote.
He often talked about how he learned about the world by reading newspapers to his grandmother and how his mother taught him the story of Thurgood Marshall, the famous civil rights attorney who became his hero.
“He was always interested in leadership and responding to injustice,” said Sean Pittman, a lawyer who has been his friend for 30 years since they met at Florida State University.
