Best Restaurants In Des Moines – There’s no way to film a movie series in Des Moines without including our amazing restaurants. There’s really no way to include them all, so I’ve chosen my personal list of must-visit restaurants in Des Moines, Iowa. If you call me and tell me you’re in town for an event, bachelorette party, or just a party downtown, these are the people I recommend. Our city’s restaurant scene continues to grow into an incredible mix, and here are my favorites based on the reasons I love going there.
One of the first restaurants I fell in love with when I moved to Des Moines, Centro will always be a top contender. A staple in downtown Des Moines, they serve Italian food from South Union, a lunch spot they associate with their pizza/salad combos and homemade bread. The perfect combination of modern finishes, vintage design and original floor tiles welcomes you with the aroma of garlic and red wine, waiters in traditional white shirts and black ties, clinking dishes and chatter echoing above the high ceilings. Such a fun place to have lunch and entertain out of town guests.

Once upon a time, when you and I went for a walk around town every weekend, exile was our routine. Go there for a beer and a show and continue to the bar. This unique, renovated warehouse is now a brewery serving some of the most popular local beers in Des Moines. You can’t stop at a beer hall and then go to a restaurant and enjoy delicious food that goes well with the acidity of the beer. From hamburgers to gourmet meats and cheeses, there is something for everyone.
Another Reason To Caucus In Iowa: The Restaurants
High Life Lounge is really fun looking for casual bar food with an ice cold beer. That retro feel feels like a time machine on purpose, and a $2 sip of Miller High Life makes it even better. Oh, and you can’t beat the $5 burger basket. Or order some of their infamous bacon biscuits and they’ll be good to go. However, you will be dining with ankle-high rugs, old Schlitz ads, and great company. This is a fun place to stop on the bike trail before a sporting event or enjoy a fun night out.
The perfect setting with a long selection of cocktails and a choice of palettes, how could it be better for dates or hen nights? He can’t. When the weather gets cold, one of my favorite places to hang out is a dimly lit quaint building. From their smoked whiskey to their crab cake sliders, I could order off the menu all night. Reservations are recommended on weekends as seating is limited, but they also have fun couches and low cocktail tables out front on a first-come, first-served basis.
Guacamole and fish tacos are enough to win my heart, but there are few. For me, one of the most unique menus I’ve come across in the city, it has so many “must haves” that I can’t even begin. On top of that, not only the food but also the atmosphere of this world is truly unique. Located in the heart of the city, right inside the social club, this is a great place to visit. I regularly come for lunch and order their a la carte taco menu with a side of salad. My mouth is watering just thinking about it! In greater Des Moines, not all of our food is made on a stick. Aposto offers one of the metro’s most unique dining experiences with modern classics inside an 1880 Victorian mansion. At home in Sherman Hill, Des Moines’ oldest neighborhood, Aposto focuses on simplicity and prepares outstanding dishes. Whether it’s Italian dishes like wild mushroom and truffle gnocchi, Brookwood osso buco or the famous polenta pie, the only mistake you can make is not leaving room for dessert.
After a quaint little cheese shop was named “America’s Favorite Cheesecake,” its growing popularity spawned a cheese bar industry, and we’re all better for it. Their grilled cheese has a cult following, their cast iron meat and cheese not so much. High ceilings and an interesting beer and wine list add a European feel to the event, but both the food and the people are Iowa Nice.
Bubba’s brings Southern hospitality to the heart of the Midwest with upscale classics like fried green tomatoes, Kentucky hot dogs and butter fried chicken. Wash it all down with a mint julep or two. The Southern charm doesn’t end with the food, with chandeliers, high-back chairs, Chesterfield sofas and hexagonal flatware creating a unique dining experience.

Nothing is certain in life except death, taxes, and Simon’s is the locals’ favorite restaurant. Formerly known as J Benjamin’s, people line up outside the door before this quirky bistro opens. Being one of the most consistent restaurants in the subway, Simon personally walks the dining room to give you the perfect taste. Comfort food like burgo steak, stuffed chicken or lasagna is the perfect meal.
Credit for helping make Centro Des Moines the dining destination it is today, as well as its reputation. Located in a restored Beaux-Arts cathedral in the heart of the city, this beautiful spot serves Italian favorites in a classy atmosphere. It’s all good, but our favorite might be their wood-fired pizza, which we’d put up with the best pies in Chicago and New York any day.
