Graham Construction has been a trusted partner of UnityPoint Health – Des Moines since 1981. Our latest joint project is IMMC & Children’s Hospital Vacant. Emergency room. This multi-phase addition and renovation project will be built right in the heart of the hospital campus. Before the additions began, the emergency department and ambulance dispatch were moved to a temporary location so that services would not be interrupted. Some key facilities were also moved from the development area.
The new 40,860 square foot addition has a 4,800 square foot basement for mechanical needs. IMMC’s General Emergency Department, Level 1 Trauma Center and Ambulance Garage are located in this additional space. The addition also includes a CATH lab and two X-ray rooms. The vacant pediatric emergency department, clinical decision-making and emergency management units occupy temporary space in the new section, while the old 8,800-square-foot emergency department has been renovated for physician and staff offices and dressing rooms. The main challenge of this project is to ensure 24-7 patient and public access, infection control and patient safety

Office Of The President
As a Level 1 trauma center, Iowa Methodist has the professionals, experience and equipment necessary to save lives in emergency situations. Being a level one trauma center requires a team approach to patient care. The trauma team includes members from many departments, such as:
When trauma patients arrive, members of this team are ready for their arrival. Patients are assessed and treated simultaneously and quickly. Team members stay with the patient until the patient is transferred from the emergency department to the operating room, intensive care unit, or operating floor. A trauma team is a multidisciplinary team led by a surgeon who continues to care for injured patients throughout their hospital stay. The team is a multidisciplinary team led by a surgeon where each team member contributes to patient care through daily collaboration and team visits.
79 of Iowa’s 99 counties are considered rural, and 75 percent of all Iowa counties are volunteer. The Rural Trauma Team Development Course helps educate rural hospitals about current trauma training based on ATLS, TNCC and PHTLS principles. This course emphasizes communication and teamwork as the foundation of effective patient care. This is a one day course with CME, CE and CEH available.
The American Committee of Surgeons on Trauma (ACS COT) acknowledges that mass casualty is not just a busy night at the city’s trauma center. Most service providers have little background or experience in these situations. To fill this gap, the Trauma Commission has created this course to help hospital staff develop the necessary skills, understand the language, and appreciate structural redesign to effectively respond to mass casualty disasters. The program is designed to stimulate thinking about how to be better prepared as individuals, professionals, organizations and healthcare systems. This is a one day course with CME, CE and CEH available.

The Stop the Bleed program focuses on how to turn bystanders into first responders at any event. In a mass casualty situation, responders may be delayed by safety concerns, weather hazards or other unforeseen circumstances. This course focuses on the critical time between injury and definitive care. Bleeding is the number one preventable cause of death after injury.
The American College of Surgeons and the Committee on Trauma (COT) have developed an ATLS program for physicians. This program provides structured and concise training in the primary care of trauma patients. The ATLS program is a safe and reliable method for the immediate management of injured patients and the basic knowledge required to:
The first few minutes of trauma care are critical for better patient outcomes. The ENATrauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) is widely recognized as the premier course for hospitals and trauma centers worldwide, providing nurses with the knowledge, critical thinking skills, and practical training to provide specialized care to trauma patients.

As a Level I trauma center, Iowa Methodist Medical Center is dedicated to research and scientific activity in the field of traumatic injury. Studies have shown that patient outcomes improve when an organized trauma system includes interactions between basic research and clinical care. Primary care includes comprehensive care across multiple indications and specialties, including pediatrics, internal medicine and family medicine. Instead of specializing in a specific medical field, a doctor is trained to meet all of a patient’s needs as a single point of contact. Urgent and express care treats minor medical problems and injuries that are not life-threatening but require the attention of a health care provider.
