1979 convertibles were not available until January 1979, all 40s sold in the US until December 1978 were 1978 models but those sold after September 1978 were 1979 models. .

I live in GA and you don’t have to have a title over 20 years. All you need is a receipt written on a napkin. You can find anything listed in GA
I have bought and sold tens of thousands of classic cars and inspected hundreds of them. What surprises me is how many people in GA don’t care about titles. Buyers and sellers, don’t worry about changing your name, because when it’s lost, it’s gone. Unless it’s an auto part, I don’t buy most cars without a title (no matter how old it is). In my opinion, property would be much less valuable without ownership.

I have seen some questionable cars that have been heard about in GA, especially the FJ40. It is easy to remove the bath from one and place another image. and old cars and trucks can easily remove the VIN license plate.
Can I ask why the VIN license plate was lost? Anyone who has taken the time to restore it to good condition knows how important it is to keep the VIN plate on the vehicle.
If I had to bet, I would say this was a “secret bomb” not too long ago. May not be the current owner, previously purchased.
I’m not saying this is a bad FJ40, I’m just saying that if I were considering buying it, I’d ask a few more questions and do some homework.

NM sent it abroad because he didn’t want to cause trouble, so please keep that context in mind.

The good news about GA is that after a certain age (1985?) you don’t need a name. You’ll save some money when you sign up.
