A highly collaborative process was developed to determine what each department needed from the new space, combining the talents and perspectives of the emergency department, the Level 1 Disaster Center, and the design team.
Wayfinding is incorporated into the design through signage, graphics, floor design and color choices to reduce stress for patients and families, a key point for staff. To differentiate between adult and pediatric emergency rooms, each area has its own unique feel. However, different aesthetic elements come together in the common living room. Health – Des Moines is pleased to announce a new emergency medicine shelter program. This is a three-year program with 6 participants per year. Rotations include adult emergency departments, pediatric emergency departments, ICUs, and Level 1 trauma surgery services. Primary rotations take place at Iowa Methodist Medical Center and Baylor Children’s Hospital – Health in Des Moines. The program recently received ACGME accreditation and is funded and administered by emergency physicians and hospital management.

He attended medical school at Carver School of Medicine in Iowa, graduated with honors in international health and service, and served as chief of residency training at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinic. He is the Vice Chair of the Law and Ethics Committee of the Iowa Medical Association and a member of the ACEP National Ethics Committee. In addition to clinical work and leadership of the Emergency Medicine Residency Program, Dr. Klusner serves as the deputy medical director of the emergency department. His professional interests include medical ethics, humanities, medical education, and mid-career process improvement. He enjoys spending time with his wife and four sons in Des’ comfortable family environment.
