Movies In Des Moines Iowa Area – And… action! As summer approaches, the usual scene of the year plays out in Des Moines area theaters, the season of FREE or nearly free summer movie series has begun. And, due to the pandemic, we’ve seen a resurgence of the nearly extinct drive-in novelty!

Gather the family and a bottle of bug spray and head to a movie under the stars in Des Moines: Drive-In Movies at the Des Moines Valle Drive In

Washington, Iowa’s State Theatre Certified By Guinness Book Of World Records As ‘oldest’

The Valle Drive In is an old-style disco that doubles as a concession stand and is usually open Memorial Day through Labor Day. Due to damage caused by last year’s storm, the record company has not set an opening date for 2022. Doors open at 6.30pm and the main feature starts after dark. General Admission (ages 12 and up) $8.00; Children’s admission (ages 5 to 11) $5.00; FREE entry (children under 4). Visit their website to learn more.

The south end of the Valley West Mall parking lot will be showing movies Thursday through Sunday from June through October 2022. Two films will be shown every night, as usual, with a film for the family. There will also be a children’s play area and food and drink vendors, including a 21+ bar. Admission is $20 per car for the early show and $25 for the late show. Visit the website for movie listings and to purchase tickets.

Movies Under the Stars is hosted on Friday nights in June and July at the Band Shell in Wagner Park (410 W 1st Street, Ankeny). The film begins at dusk. The film is FREE and open to the public; bring lawn chairs and blankets to sit on.

Relax on the patio behind Porch Light Coffeehouse and Uptown Garage Brewing Co. in Uptown Ankeny and see your favorite summer (and fall) movies. FREE movies start at dusk every Saturday through the end of October.

Let’s Go To The Movies, Des Moines!

Clive Parks and Recreation hosts several Sunday night Family Movie nights at various Clive parks. Take the family to a movie night under the stars. The film is broadcast via an elevated digital LED screen. Be sure to bring bug spray, lawn chairs and blankets and enjoy the outdoors.

Free Flicks is an outdoor summer movie series offered on Friday nights throughout the Des Moines area. Movies are shown on a 25-foot portable screen and begin at sunset around 9:00 p.m. Admission is FREE, blankets and lawn chairs are encouraged. Feel free to bring your own snacks as they will not be providing concessions. If it rains, there will be no filming. August 5: Happy Gilmore – A.H. Golf course Blank (808 County Line Rd, Des Moines, IA 50320)

Treat your family to an unforgettable Friday night this summer at a FREE family movie under the stars at Memorial Park Amphitheater. Bring a blanket or lawn chair. Food trucks are available from 6 to 9 p.m. Be sure to check the start time for each movie as it changes every month.

A New Documentary About Des Moines’ Old Movie Theaters

Put out your lawn chairs and blankets and bring your friends and family to enjoy a night under the stars at one of Urbandale Parks and Recreation’s FREE outdoor movies. Movies are shown at a different location every month and start at sunset. The parking lot will open one hour before the show and food trucks will be there.

August 26: Guardians of the Galaxy – The Great Shelter at Walnut Creek Regional Park (4100 Walnut Creek Park Road, Urbandale)

This FREE event is a great way to make memories with your family and neighbors at Waukee’s Centennial Park while enjoying Hollywood’s biggest hits under the stars. Don’t forget to bring your own lawn chairs and blankets. The film will start at 20:45.

Join West Des Moines Parks and Rec for a FREE outdoor movie series on Fridays in June and July. Start an hour before the movie, enjoy show-related activities and enjoy food trucks. The film begins at sunset.

Varsity Cinema Construction Has Begun In Des Moines, Iowa

The Park films will return in 2022. The films are FREE to watch and will be shown in Colby Park after dark. Bring a chair or a blanket and enjoy the show! If the event has to be canceled or moved indoors due to the weather, the decision will be made on the day of the event, before 2:00 p.m., and will be announced on the municipality’s Facebook page.
