Iowa Community Choice Credit Union – In 2009, Polk County hired OPN Architects to renovate and expand the Veterans Memorial Auditorium at the Iowa Events Center and provide an additional 60,000 square feet of meeting, dance and exhibit space.
Renovating the 55-year-old auditorium allows the center to host larger events, including state, regional and national conventions and exhibitions. The dramatic renovation included removing 7,200 seats in the auditorium and building a second floor, providing an additional 63,000 square feet of meeting and dance space within the venue.

Key design elements include providing partitioned spaces for maximum flexibility in use and operation, dock-in access, audio visual, audio, electrical, lighting and low voltage suitable for operation and use. A new tent or tent area for food service equipment will be added to support the new banquet facilities. The design integrated and utilized existing building automation and MEP systems.

The design and remodeling of the Community Credit Union Conference Center along with the interior renovations of the Veterans Auditorium is complete. Originally built in 1954, the plaza was partially renovated in the mid-1980s with the addition of the western amphitheater. The renovation focuses on improving public circulation, ease of access, creating outdoor event space, commemorating an existing dedicated monument, and renewing the park’s planting space. Emphasis is placed on creating large yet intimate event spaces using soft spaces and plantings to define dynamic spaces for both small and large events. Private spaces outside the event space were also created for small talk and personal reflection.
The project presented logistical and time challenges. The most important of these is the need to keep the center operational and fully functional throughout these stages of renovation. Creative planning and careful attention to project development enabled the team to meet these challenges. A state feasibility study helped shape the idea of renovating the old structure into a modern, state-of-the-art convention center, with nearly 32,000 square feet of lower-level exhibit space, multiple meeting rooms and 32,000 meeting rooms. square feet on the main floor, eliminating the auditorium’s balcony seating area and adding more than 28,000 square feet of additional space to create the state’s largest ballroom and multi-purpose space, a massive undertaking.
The ballroom presented the biggest challenge during the renovation both aesthetically and acoustically. With the massive open ceiling (nearly 50 feet above), the architect wanted to bring a sense of warmth and intimacy to the ballroom, while still using the impressive height of the space to create the grandeur of space that was needed. He also wanted to use materials for the best possible acoustic treatment, as the building was originally constructed with little attention to sound control.
The solution created by Golden Valley Supply is unique 2″x7’x24′ fiberglass shells covered in white painted raw material and includes an 8″ hinge around the perimeter. These clouds will be placed starting at the sides of the room, about 30′ high in a small radius from the edge to a 38′ top creating a barrel effect. To form the clouds, they must be constructed with five 4’x7′ panels and two 2’x7′ end panels joined with drywall grid hanging at plastic points on the back of the slab.

The height at which these panels are installed also creates problems for the installer because the contractor is not allowed to use lifts that can reach more than 30 feet above the newly installed floor. Because the clouds are so large and made of fiberglass, it is almost impossible to create clouds in the air. After much discussion between all parties involved, the creative solution was to form groups on a platform on the ground and then stand up with the girls at all 4 corners. The contractor then leveled the clouds with hangar ropes and lowered the platform to the ground. It works flawlessly.
