NEW YORK (AP) – U.S. regulators announced a deal Wednesday with the company that runs Dollar Tree and Family Dollar aimed at improving worker safety at thousands of discount stores across the country.

Officials from the Ministry of Labor emphasized the dangers of shops, including blocked exits, unsafe storage of materials and improper use of fire extinguishers and electrical panels.

Under the agreement, the chain, operated by Dollar Tree Inc., must find the “root causes” of violations cited by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration at various stores and fix them within two years.
Assistant Secretary of Labor Doug Parker noted that OSHA has issued 403 violations to Dollar Tree and Family Dollar stores since 2017, resulting in more than $13.1 million in fines to date. The company has made improvements to worker safety since a 2015 agreement that expired in 2018, Parker said, but the continued violations show more needs to be done.

Last week’s settlement covers all Family Dollar and Dollar Tree stores under OSHA’s federal jurisdiction — 10,000 locations nationwide, according to labor attorney Seema Nanda. The company is also required to maintain a 24-hour hotline for safety complaints and protect workers from retaliation, Nanda added.

Dollar Tree and Family Dollar face hefty fines for subsequent violations. If hazards are not properly corrected within 48 hours of OSHA notification, the company can face fines of up to $100,000 per day of violation, up to $500,000 per store, plus subsequent OSHA inspections and enforcement.
In addition to those fines, Dollar Tree and Family Dollar will pay $1.4 million in fines to settle disputes and public inspections related to similar alleged violations, the Labor Department announced Wednesday.

Dollar Tree Inc., based in Chesapeake, Virginia. In 2015, it bought Family Dollar for about $9 billion. The company has more than 16,000 Dollar Tree and Family Dollar stores in 48 states and Canada, employing more than 193,000 people, according to the Labor Department.
