Craigslist Des Moines Ia Cars By Owner – Browsing Craigslist for interesting cars to buy can be an hour-long task, so we’ll do it for you. Welcome to our new weekly series where, as the title suggests, we highlight some of the coolest cars, trucks and SUVs available. Let’s call them hidden treasures scattered across America just waiting to be discovered. So let’s start with this performance worthy 1986 Suzuki Samurai JX. Also known as the Jimny in other markets, the Samurai was first sold in the United States in 1985.
This is a relatively small and inexpensive 4×4 that, according to Consumer Reports, flips easily. Suzuki politely disagreed with this assessment, filing a libel suit at best. In the end both sides decided not to agree. Anyway, back to the Samurai in question: this small SUV is offered by Suzuki specialist Samurai Salvage, based near Des Moines, Iowa. If you didn’t already know, Suzuki left the North American market in 2012, so the fact that it’s being sold by a specialist is reassuring. Built and customized for car shows like World of Wheels, this Samurai has a Mighty Mouse theme thanks to some (removable) exterior decals.

The stitching on the Mighty Mouse headrest appears to be permanent, unless you want to replace the leather seats with a new pair. Other upgrades include aluminum wheels with BF Goodrich tires, Weber carburetor, stainless steel exhaust manifold, heavy duty clutch kit, washer and antifreeze bottles. Samurai Salvage says the build itself will be very expensive, which explains the $25,000 asking price. Under the hood is a four-cylinder gasoline engine that we believe is a 1.3-liter with 63 hp used for the American market along with a manual transmission, which sends power to the rear or all four wheels. There is also a center console ignition.

Despite the Samurai’s compact dimensions and lightweight construction, it still features a transfer case and interchangeable all-wheel drive. Due to its body weight, the Samurai is a small SUV that does not sink very easily on soft surfaces, unlike heavier SUVs. Another great thing about this particular Samurai is the removable top and bed cover. It also has anodized jack handle, wrench and hood support bar. But $25,000? As nice as it is, it’s not cheap for something over 30 years old. On the other hand, it is a real analog SUV that goes back to its roots. There are no power windows. No luxury. That’s part of its charm. Photo courtesy of Samurai Salvage. The jewel of the central Midwest, also known as the Greater Des Moines, Iowa area, can be a great source for solid car deals. Whether you’re a local or looking for a moderately well-maintained gem willing to travel, you might be surprised by what’s popping up on Craigslist in the city Slipknot once called home. There are some great finds in this part of the country, and here are five examples to prove it.
Please Note: Garage’s “Five Under Five” highlights five cars listed under $5,000 in a specific geographic area. The idea is to have your finger on the pulse of the low-end auto market and provide context for the current state of what’s on Craigslist. An old boss of mine referred to a Chrysler/Dodge van, regardless of generation, as a Cognoscenti car, and I agree. They are durable and versatile carriers, completely practical for a variety of people. They’ve been safely traveling with American families for the better part of the last 40 years, providing the local punk scene with plenty of instrument carrying capacity since the late 90s. You might see a college professor driving.
This vintage Chrysler pickup truck is probably cheaper to repair than most vehicles out there, and I wouldn’t be surprised if the supplies needed for a major overhaul could be picked up in one visit to your favorite auto parts store.
Golf Cars Of Iowa
This 2011 example has covered 196,000 miles and only needs a little maintenance to be truly top notch. The owner says it has had a few services recently, the interior looks generally clean and has a backup camera! For affordable, reliable and safe family transportation not even full currency, this is at the top of my list.
In the past, many car manufacturers made the smart and well-respected business decision to offer basic specification manual transmissions. You have to pay a little more for a car, which by today’s standards seems like a no-brainer: why pay more for a slow-moving slush machine that can cost an arm and a leg to rebuild or completely replace if things go wrong? Especially if you live in a part of the country that doesn’t have a lot of traffic, like Des Moines, Iowa, then people can’t use traffic as an excuse to avoid the three-pedal life.
Who doesn’t love a basic Honda manual transmission from the 90’s and early 00’s? This generation of Accord is better, because it has a four-cylinder engine that can be oiled with a mixture of sand and paint (maybe you should try that Neutral Drop sometime).
This 2000 model in LX trim has a very clean interior, new tires, lots of recent maintenance and has almost 264,000 miles. If well maintained, that’s less than half its life, which doesn’t take much work to achieve. It appears to have been owned with love and gentle care, and every All it takes is $3,000 to pass the baton of Honda’s reliability on to its next owner.

Damn, how cool is this next rig. Bob Seger himself will complete it all. This 2000 Chevrolet K2500 features a single cab, long bed and is probably one of the last generations built before the arrival of the Silverado. For $3,500 in 2022, this truck is not a bad deal.
This white is also probably the easiest shade to match, by far, so if you decide to fix the rust, repaint it and return it fresh to the original dealer. The good thing is that it is not that expensive. You can even leave it alone and use it as a faithful workhorse for years to come. The small block Chevy V8 under its hood probably stands a better chance against electromagnetic pulse than any modern V8 truck, and 185,241 miles is still pretty young for that.
Also check out the blue lounge chair! I love a good truck with updated base spec and this thing is a great example. When times were simpler and GM was happy to paint the interior an interesting color (by today’s standards). I’m the only one who owns it, and you better believe I have a tape player with lots of Bob Seger tapes on hand.
If you’re in the dark, if you’re in the dark, why not buy the 1990 Chevy Lumina Van? Remember the Lumina nameplate? Chevrolet also makes it in pickup truck form, better known as the Lumina APV. This wedge-shaped piece of pure early ’90s design shares its chassis with the Pontiac Trans Sport, a pickup truck made famous by Rodney Dingerfield’s 1992 classic, Ladybugs.

Look: this graphic, this greenhouse! From the look of the front-mounted device, this museum piece seems to live its life like a trailer. This operation was carried out and a new exhaust system and brake pipes were also replaced, probably due to rust. Since it’s a tow and has such low mileage, it’s a good idea to make sure the tires are less than five years old, the oil changed fairly frequently, the transmission smooth, and all gaskets and seals. And the bushings are in good condition.
But still, what a time capsule. Like most GM cars of the era, this thing could be very cheap to run. I’m not sure about the ease of maintenance, as I imagine it would be difficult to get around with its 3.1, 3.4 or 3.8 liter V6. I’m sure there were a few people under the hood. Regardless, $5,000 makes it a great deal, and it’ll get a strong look from any ’90s car connoisseur you meet on the street.
Here’s something that will haunt all Porsche Club of America concours forefathers: a 1984 Porsche 944. Like the Lumina APV above, this thing is a true icon of its time and like its Boxster predecessor. This is everyone’s Porsche. You don’t have to earn a comfortable white collar life to have a new one in your garage, you just have to live comfortably upper middle class.
