Community Choice Credit Union Iowa – In 2009, Polk County hired OPN Architects to renovate and expand the Veterans Memorial Hall at the Iowa State Events Center and provide an additional 60,000 square feet of meeting, ballroom and exhibit space.
The renovation of the 55-year-old auditorium allows the center to host larger events, including state, regional and national conferences and fairs. The major renovation included the removal of 7,200 seats in the auditorium and the creation of a second floor that provided an additional 63,000 square feet of meeting space and a ballroom within the auditorium.

Key design elements include a space that can be subdivided for maximum flexibility in use and function, dock access, audiovisual, acoustic, electrical, lighting and low-voltage systems that adapt to the function and use of the space . To support the new banquet space, a new area will be added to house catering equipment. The project incorporates and uses existing building automation and MEP systems.

The design and renovation of the Community Choice Credit Union Conference Center was completed at the same time as the interior renovation of the Veterans Memorial Auditorium. Originally built in 1954, the plaza was partially renovated in the mid-1980s along with the addition of the West Auditorium. The renovation focused on improving public movement, accessibility, creating outdoor spaces for events, celebrating existing specific monuments and renovating the square’s trees. The goal is to create large yet intimate event spaces using soft landscaping and plants to define dynamic spaces for small and large events. Private spaces are also created outside of events for individual chats and reflections.
The project caused logistical and time challenges. Among the key points is the need for the center to remain functional and fully operational throughout the renovation. Creative planning and careful attention to project planning allowed the team to accomplish this task. A state feasibility study helped shape the idea to renovate the aging facility into a state-of-the-art convention center with nearly 32,000 square feet of lower exhibit space, 32,000 square feet of multiple meeting rooms on the main floor, removing the auditorium balcony seating and adding more than 28,000 square feet of additional space to create the largest ballroom and multi-purpose facility in the state, was a major undertaking.
The ballroom presents a major problem during renovation both from an aesthetic and acoustic point of view. With such a large open ceiling space (nearly 50 feet to the peak), the architects wanted to create a warm and intimate atmosphere in the ballroom, while taking advantage of the dramatic height of the space to create the grandeur of the required space. He also wanted to use the materials to achieve the best acoustic treatment, given that the building was originally built with little attention to sound control.
The solution, created by Golden Valley Supply, is a unique 2″ x 7′ x 24′ fiberglass pod covered in white painted canvas and includes an 8″ built-in perimeter border. These clouds will be installed starting from the side of the room, approximately 30 feet high with a slight radius from side to side to a peak of 38 feet, creating a barrel effect. To build the clouds, they must be constructed with five 4’x7′ panels and two 2’x7′ end panels, bolted through the drywall mesh to the resin points on the back of the panels.

The height at which these panels are installed also creates problems for the installer because the contractor is not allowed to use a lift that can exceed 30 feet in height on the newly installed floor. Because the cloud is so large and made of fiberglass, it is nearly impossible to build in the air. After a long discussion between all interested parties, the creative solution was to build the pod on a platform on the ground and then lift it with females at the 4 corners. The contractor then flattens the cloud with a hangar cable and lowers the platform to the ground. It works magically.
